Monthly Update - September 2023

Everything that happened at Mon Studios for the past month

18 Months of Updates! We're excited to continue this tradition in a newer format, with all monthly and development updates being available on our website from now on. The previous updates will always be available on our medium.

Lets take a look at what our team worked on, for the past one month:

Art Update

Battle System

Since the player will spend most of their time in the battle system, our team has been working on making sure that each and every element of the battle system is pixel perfect.

With the development of the battle system almost near completion, our art team worked on completing the pending monster designs required for Q1/24 update.

In addition to this, the team also worked on early versions of new biome designs, special battle introduction animations for certain characters, and attack animations.

Overworld

Our main focus for the past month was to work on adding new interactive elements in the overworld to increase immersion. This includes monster capture animations, newer emojis and interactive items around the world map.

The art team mainly worked on completing the required overworld locations for Q1/24 update. This includes Yorokobi Village, Sunshine Trail, Heiwa Village, Fabled Mountain (Excluded), and Tori Beach (Pending).

The team also worked on newer character designs including Atom (refresh), Bellatrix, Cosmo, Young Botan, The Order (Male/Female) and 10+ special event based character skins.

Map

Players will be able to access an overview map of the locations present in the game world via the Main Menu. This overview map will allow them to fast travel between different locations.

Players can fast travel from one location to another based on the travel method available to them. The game features two different travel methods, trains and beacons. A player can travel from one village to another via a beacon. While, for towns and cities, players can use trains. However, a player is not able to fast travel from a town/city to a village, and vice versa.

Development & Design Update

User Interface

The development team has been mainly focused on the revamp of our game's user interface, with the goal to make everything consistent and readable.

Most of the commonly used user interfaces have been fully designed and developed, now under testing. For example, focusing our attention on the skin selection menu, which now lives under the Player Centre, as a sub-menu.

The Skin Selection menu, now not only allows the player to search for different skins that they own, but also allows them to filter and sort these skins based on gender, buff and name. The user interface has been designed in a way to be useable on mobiles and pc (even without a mouse!) with minimal changes.

The Friends menu, is another step towards our goal of building a social game. This menu will allow players to add/block/search for other players, and then allow them to chat with each other or even battle, via the chat system.

Apartment Builder

Our team has been working on revamping the apartment builder to allow players to create overworld-like apartments, in-order to maintain consistency among all locations. This includes improvements in art, collisions and a bigger set of furniture items being available.

The Q1/24 update will also feature support for furniture packs to allow players to be able to use limited edition furniture items in their apartment.

Quest Design

Our team has finished designing more than 10 quests for Q1/24 release, this accounts for more than 1.5 hours of gameplay content, with more to be added. The newer quests feature a branching pattern, allowing the player to experience hidden options, dialogue and even events.

These quests are no longer limited to a single starting character, making sure that each and every adventure is different, allowing the player to replay the game multiple times.
